Automic 21 Upgrade Revitalizes Petroleum Industry Leader

RMT Guides Automic 12.3 to 21 Upgrade with IICS Integration
Case Study

The Organization:

A well-established oil and gas enterprise operating in the NAM region runs critical exploration, production, and back-office workloads on Broadcom Automic Workload Automation. Over time, the estate expanded into several separate Automic 12.3 instances that orchestrate data flows, scheduling windows, and business reporting.

To maintain reliability and performance, the customer relies on RMT for a full spectrum of services: Implementation, Integrations, Managed Support, Application Integration, Migration, Technical Support Services, Roadmap and Strategy, Upgrade and Migration Services, Managed Services, plus Training and Education.

These offerings give the customer’s automation team access to a single partner that understands both energy-sector demands and enterprise-grade workload tooling.

The Challenge:

Leadership decided that moving from Automic 12.3 to Automic 21 would set a new benchmark for operational excellence, but the path forward required expert guidance. Several issues surfaced at once:

  1. Needed expertise for Automic upgrade – The internal staff had limited direct experience with version 21 features, upgrade tools, and best practice playbooks.
  2. Required services for Automic upgrade – The effort would span planning, implementation, and long term support, so a broad service catalog was essential.
  3. Implementation of IICS agent needed – Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services would become a strategic integration layer, and the customer wanted native Automic Automation control over those cloud-based workflows.
  4. Conversion of Informatica to IICS jobs – Existing Informatica Automic jobs had to be recreated as IICS Automic jobs without breaking dependencies.
  5. Expert assistance in Automic transition – A trusted advisor was necessary to co-create a roadmap, coordinate multiple environments, and keep operations stable throughout the migration.

Recognizing that each challenge spanned people, process, and technology, the customer engaged RMT to provide integrated guidance and set the stage for a unified transformation.

The Solution:

RMT responded with a structured engagement anchored in best practice implementation guidelines. The team started by taking inventory of every Automic instance, cataloging agent footprints, and clarifying integration touchpoints. Findings fed directly into a jointly authored roadmap that outlined sequencing, risk controls, and handoff milestones.

Upgrade execution followed the roadmap step by step. For every targeted environment, RMT performed a disciplined migration from version 12.3 to version 21, confirming that core scheduling logic, calendars, and dependencies behaved as expected after each cutover. As part of the same workflow, the team deployed enhanced agent functionality introduced in the newer release, giving operations staff more granular visibility into job status and agent health.

A parallel workstream focused on cloud integration. RMT implemented the IICS agent inside Automic, created secure connections to Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services, and validated agent reachability from the existing scheduling framework. Once connectivity was in place, RMT converted Informatica Automic jobs to IICS Automic jobs, mapping parameters and schedules so output remained identical from an end user perspective.

Throughout the project, RMT provided managed services and technical support, answering questions, resolving incidents, and reinforcing upgrade learnings with targeted Training and Education sessions. This combination of hands-on delivery and knowledge transfer positioned the customer to operate its modernized platform confidently.

The Results:

  1. RMT leads successful Automic upgrade – All planned instances now run Automic 21, delivering an up to date automation foundation.
  2. Successful implementation of IICS agent – Cloud workflows integrate seamlessly with on premises processes through native Automic control.
  3. Moved Informatica jobs to IICS Automic – Job conversion preserves scheduling integrity while aligning with the customer’s cloud strategy.
  4. Strategic tips for ongoing improvements – The roadmap documents next steps for feature adoption, capacity planning, and governance refinements.
  5. Advised leveraging Automic Analytics – Recommended evaluation of built-in dashboards to support performance monitoring and help identify tuning opportunities.

These solutions addressed every objective defined at project kickoff, ensuring the customer’s automation stack remains both current and ready to adapt

The Road Ahead:

With the migration complete, the organization can focus on continuous improvement rather than foundational catch-up. The co-created roadmap highlights phases for incremental feature enablement, agent expansion, and skills development, all supported by RMT’s Managed Services.

By pairing upgrade success with structured best practice guidance, the petroleum industry leader has ensured that Automic remains a strategic asset capable of meeting new workload demands, regulatory changes, and growth objectives. The collaboration between client and partner stands as a clear example of friction free workload modernization that boosts reliability and long-term performance.
